Imagine you have a cousin living in Poland and she gets elected to the Sejm, and later on becomes a member of the cabinet. Talking of her political career in Polish, you’d use the word posłanka (1) or poseł (2) for the first step, and minister (3) or perhaps ministra (4) for the next one. To name the family relationship you’d call her kuzynka (5). And if you think she’s not courageous (happens even with politicians), you’d describe her as tchórz (6). Among the words quoted, (1), (4) and (5) directly show you are talking about a woman, while (2), (3) and (6) do not. My talk will uncover the interaction of grammar, lexicon and conscious attitudes in the evolving use of such words in present-day Polish. The discussion of these forms will also touch upon historical development, approach of the speakers to the language and possible future scenarios.
