The Laboratory was established in 1993. Its research concentrates on the so-called „third area” of literature and culture, i.e. the area between belles lettres and folklore. It includes, in particular, occasional texts, homilies and other rhetoric forms, consumer literature (guides, handbooks), personal documents (memoirs, epistolography) and specific forms of literature on the borderline between written and spoken word (story, tale) or word and visual arts (comics).

In the actions of the Laboratory participate co-operators from other institutions (among other the Institute for Literary Research, Polish Academy of Scences). Together with the Team of Research on the “Third Areas” at the Laboratory of Literature of the second half of the nineteenth century IBL PAN the Laboratory organizes regular scientific meetings and conferences.

Since 1994 the Laboratory of Occasional and Consumer Literature has also co-operated with the editors of the yearly periodical „Napis” [“Inscription”], devoted to occasional and customer literature. In 2008 came out fourteenth series of the annual: “Krzywe zwierciadło na gościńcu. Literacka satyra, karykatura, groteska” [“Distorting mirror on the road. Literary satire, caricature, grotesque”], in the preparation is the fifteenth anniversary series “Umysły zniewolone. Literatura pod presją” [“Enslaved minds. Literature under pressure”].

Recent publications of the Laboratory and the Team:

• complete critical edition of the Literature of Bar Confederation (Volume I Drama and Volume II Dialogues, Warsaw 2005, Volume III Poems and Volume IV Varia, Warsaw 2009);

• in 2007 IBL publishing house (in collaboration with the Foundation of the Academy of Humanities) published the book “Żywioł słowa. Literatura i jej formy mówione ” [“Element of words. Literature and its spoken form”] (edited by Janusz Maciejewski), including articles by Kazimierz Bartoszyński, Paweł Dudziak, Agata Grabowska-Kuniczuk, Roman Loth, Janusz Maciejewski i Bartłomiej Szleszyński.
